Ecological agriculture

Ecological agriculture

At the very beginning, in 2007, there was no agriculture at all on this piece of land.
Only a few animals running around in the forest or on fallow pastures. In hard work, Marco Bentzien has created about 35 hectares of agricultural land over the years, another 70 are in work. This cultivation is very time consuming and costly. Of course, no forest was cut down but, he only worked on fallow land. The process of cultivation may take many years, because the soil needs to be reprocessed several times to provide reasonably good returns. Today we are already harvesting the feed for our cows, sheep and horses. For the future, we plan to grow organic cereals, possibly even quinoa and similar exotics.

The motto “quality instead of quantity” applies here as well. Important to us are healthy plants, high-quality food, happy animals and humans as part of the whole. Marco Bentzien relies on slow healthy growth, a respectful and therefore moderate harvest. The idea is to get out products of this unique nature by innovative means, while at the same we try to protect and preserve nature giving back something which is sufficient for surviving. Quite in contrast to the intensive industrial agriculture, which unfortunately still in many places in the world overstresses the natural resources and ultimately will destroy them.

Producing healthy food and making it available to Fundo guests is Marco Bentzien’s declared goal and his passion at the same time. Today we already produce fresh dairy products such as cheese, yoghurt, cream and butter, meat of exclusively herbivorous animals, home-made bread and home-grown vegetables in greenhouses, teas made from Fundo’s own herbs, juices from various fruits, even natural remedies from plants grown which are growing in this unloaded environment.
In “El Momento”, the Fundo Restaurant, you can try it all.
